Description
Kip lives with his wife, Julie, and son, Jackson, on a working horse farm in High Shoals, Georgia. He is a working musician and travels around the southeast playing a variety of music. Kip is originally from Atlanta Ga. His dad taught him guitar at an early age, and had Kip performing songs as early as 5 years of age for friends and family. With all the music in the family, the large Jones family reunions down in Albany were great times for sing a-longs and jams, and Kip is carrying on that musical tradition. Kip came to Athens in the early 90’s to attend UGA. He had been up several times while still in high school because his sister was there. He got to see all the great bar music being played by artist like Nathan Sheppard, Vigilantes of love, and Chickasaw Mudpuppy’s, to name a few. It was all over after that. Kip new what he wanted to do. Sing and write songs, and perform in any bar he could in Athens. He did just that, all throughout the 90’s well into 2000 + not only performing in bars but at the Ga Theater, and the 40 watt. Recently Kip Opened for The Van Morrison Tribute band at the new Venue everyone is talking about, the Melting Point. Kip’s music and songwriting are from the heart. He puts personal experience in every song. Throughout the years Kip has worked many cover songs into his shows with a wide reaching range of genre. Kip’s not afraid to tackle Michael Penn’s “No Myth” or Marc Cohn’s “walking in Memphis”. Playing cover songs has affected his musical style on his original work in a positive way. It has given his music a wider range in style than most, from country to rock, to folk and pop. His songs recently caught the attention of an up and coming singer named Kristin Markinton. (Check the website for all the big names involved) Sugarland, Shawn Mullins etc. She fronts the blues band Delta Moon, but has also put together a great CD on her own. She chose the country/alt tune “Turn back the Handle,” that Kip wrote. Recently Kip is working in Athens and Atlanta clubs with a slew of musicians, depending upon the gig. His homegrown release “Downright” is mostly just Kip playing everything, but in the future he plans to record with the many friends that fill in for the live shows
