This DIY puffy paint is super easy to make at home using only 3 ingredients, and doesn't require a microwave like other similar puffy paint recipes. Heads up - it does get messy so you might want to wear clothes that are okay for getting a stain or two. Little ones will enjoy this hands-on art activity that they can help create. My favorite thing about this recipe is that it will retain it's puffy appearance and texture after it dries! 🌈
Before you start mixing any ingredients, I recommend using individual small bowls for each color OR if you are like me and don't have enough bowls -- a small muffin pan works great! For easy cleanup, line your muffin pan with cupcake liners so you can toss them when you are finished painting.
Materials You Will Need:
- 1/2 cup of shaving cream foam
- 1/2 cup of white glue
- Food coloring
- Mixing bowl
- Something to mix with (for mess-free mixing, use popsicle sticks!)
- Individual bowls or small muffin pan
- Paintbrushes
- Construction paper or card stock
How To Make Puffy Paint:
1. Create your base: Pour the glue into your mixing bowl and add the shaving cream. Mix together gently. Don't worry about using exact measurements, just make sure they are equal parts. The 1/2 cup suggestions will give you enough to make 6 colors.
2. Divide: Divide the mixture into small portions inside of your bowls or muffin pan.
3. Add Color: Add 2-3 drops of food coloring to each small portion and stir well to get an even color throughout your mixture.
4. Get Creative: Use a paintbrush (or your fingers!) to paint with your puffy paint.
Tips:
🖌️ If you mixture starts to deflate, add a little more shaving cream.
🖌️ Add glitter to a color or two for extra fun.
🖌️ Let your creations dry overnight. They will harden and can then be an art piece to add to your fridge!
Storage:
Your puffy paint won't keep until the next day and should be used shortly after making. I did make my paint ahead of time and placed it inside of a large, air-tight plastic bag to store. It kept well for the afternoon!
