Get ready to experience a solar eclipse in Athens, GA! 😎 On Monday, April 8, 2024, a partial solar eclipse will cross over the Athens area beginning at 1:46pm and last until 4:21pm, with a peak time of 3:06pm. While Athens may not be in the direct path of the eclipse, the area is expected to experience almost 80% totality. SO cool! Make this one memorable as the next total solar eclipse in the United States won't occur until August 2044! (USAToday)
So, what is an eclipse?
"A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun. (https://science.nasa.gov/)

Mrs. Snook will be in the parking lot with a special solar telescope for you to look at the eclipse! Eclipse glasses will be available for free while supplies last at the Children’s Desk and the Reference Desk upstairs.

Monday, April 8 from 9am to 3pm
Prepare for the Partial Eclipse with an educational experience! Learn about the sun and moon while you craft, and be sure to pick up your eclipse glasses before the deepest point at 3:06.

Monday, April 8 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm
Come watch NASA's "Across the Path" while enjoying popcorn and a craft! FREE solar eclipse glasses are available to attendees. One pair per person, while supplies last.

Monday, April 8 from 1:30pm to 4pm
Join us to watch the Total Solar Eclipse and enjoy fun activities and crafts. Solar glasses will be provided to those who come to the event. An live stream will be shown in case it is a rainy day.
