26 ideas for fall traditions and fun for the whole family

Fall is easily my favorite season. The chill of the air, the outdoor festivities, the changing leaves, and the smell of bonfires -- ooo, I look forward to it each and every year! If you're searching for things to do around Athens with your kiddos, take a look at our ABC Bucket List below for inspiration and use our FREE Printable to help mark some of them off as you go! 

Print it out, stick it to your fridge, and let the kids pick out which ones they'd like to do first!

ABC Bucket List

Apple picking. Find an orchard near you with help from Macaroni KID Newman's Family Orchard Guide

Bake. Mini pumpkin pies are a great place to start! 

Camping. Fall is the perfect time of year for camping!  Read camping tips for families here.

Drive. Take a scenic fall drive and find new places to explore.

Explore a corn maze. There are lots of great corn mazes nearby to visit!

Fall festivals. Because they're so much fun! Find a list of Athens Area Fall Festivals here

Ghost stories. Pull up chairs around a backyard campfire for some spooky Halloween stories.

Halloween events in Athens. There are so many family friendly Halloween events in town!

Invite friends over for a soup or chili potluck. Everyone brings their family's favorite for sharing! Check out my own recipe for crock-pot turkey chili here.

Jump onto a hayride. Okay, so maybe don't literally jump onto it.

Kettle corn. What's fall without eating kettle corn!?

Leaves. You can jump in a pile of leaves, watch them fall, or make crafts with them. To create a leaf rubbing, place a leaf on a hard surface, put a white piece of paper on the leaf, rub a crayon over, and see the leaf appear!

Make your own Halloween costumes! And let your kids do your makeup.

Pumpkins! Carve them. Cook them. Bake with them. Love them.

Quench your thirst. OK, we had to stretch a little bit on this one ... but how about some warm apple cider with the kids? Warm it on the stove with a few sticks of cinnamon to imbue your home with the smell of fall. 

Roast marshmallows over a bonfire on a chilly night.

Scarecrow. Fun and easy family project: Take some old clothes and stuff them with hay or newspapers to make a family scarecrow as part of your Halloween decorations.

Tailgate. Hanging out with friends before the big football game is always a good time.

Unplug for the day. Turn off the electronics, ignore the TV, and leave the phone behind to spend a beautiful fall day completely tuned in to your family.

Visit a National Park. Did you know there are Free National Park Days throughout the year? Learn more and see which days are upcoming here.

Wreath. Have your kids help you collect pinecones and other treasures from around your neighborhood to create your own wreath.

X marks the spot! Create a fall treasure hunt for your kids with a Halloween surprise at the end!

Yawn ... spend a lazy foul-weather Saturday at home cuddling on the couch, watching movies, and maybe even curling up in bed for a lovely mid-day nap.
