Mac KID Athens JR Reporter: Making Memories at the Bogart Library

By Mac KID Athens JR Reporter, Charli Walton June 22, 2026

Macaroni KID Athens invited our local youth to become JR Reporters and help showcase our community's most beloved kid-friendly locations and hidden gems through their eyes. Take a look at this special feature on the Bogart Library, complete with photos and helpful details, written by Charli Walton, age 8, below.

Every library is known for all the books that are available to check out and enjoy. In fact, librarian Paul McDonald estimates that the Bogart Library has over five thousand books! They don’t know for sure because no one has volunteered to count them all though. With all those books, you might think that only those who love to read would go. While this is true and there is always a new book section, there is much more to the Bogart library than reading and books.

The Bogart Library aims to provide events and programs for all ages, which, according to McDonald, gives everyone from ages 1-80+ a chance to enjoy their visit. One of the top summer programs available to kids is the summer reading program. This year’s summer reading program theme is built around dinosaurs and Jurassic Park. This summer, they are also hosting a magic show, regular storytimes, and a reptile zoo that recently had over 300 attendees! Families can find schedules and offerings on the Bogart Library website calendar, which is updated regularly. Beyond summer programs, the Bogart Library offers many more recurring events like teen Dungeons and Dragons clubs, The Knitlits knitting club, Lego mania days, scavenger hunts, an escape room and so much more.

For adults, the library offers book clubs and chances to help out at the library by volunteering for tasks like re-shelving books and pulling holds. Events like these are one of the reasons Librarian Blaine Jenkins loves working at the Library, along with the chance to interact with the community. McDonald, who has worked at the Library for four years, also enjoys working with books and getting to know the community.

For those interested in getting outside, the Bogart Library also offers an outdoor reading platform and outdoor classroom along with a storybook trail, giving visitors the chance to connect with nature. To get the wiggles out after a morning in the library, there is a playground and play space right outside along with a covered pavilion to enjoy lunch or a snack.

Although the Bogart Library has been open since 1997, it was updated in 2018. The update gives the library a more modern look, with several reading nooks and meeting rooms. The staff at the library focuses on providing a fresh and unique experience with each visit by families in Oconee County. Make plans to create new memories with your family while attending an upcoming unique event, checking out a book and exploring this amazing library.
