Getting Ready for Preschool
Entering Preschool can lead to many questions and uncertainties. Preparation is the
key to a smooth transition that leads to further growth, development, and educational
fulfillment.
Starting preschool is a normal progression for a child that also requires an adjustment for
the parent. A preschooler’s brain is still adapting and learning to absorb the vast amounts
of information that he is receiving, so the adjustment continues beyond preschool. The
brain will begin to absorb valuable skills and information when he begins elementary
school. Although, the development of the human brain begins holistically at birth and
through the first 5 years of life, how a child learns is very important. If a child isn’t given
the appropriate opportunity to learn literature, language, social/emotional and physical
sills with an suitable early childhood curriculum during this time in his life, there are
chances he will have a difficult time maintaining the academic pace with his peers once
he enters elementary school.
Here are some guidelines to ensure success in preschool.
Cognitive thinking and social-emotional behavior are the two primary components to a
child’s developmental foundation. —Apart from language and physical development.
Cognitive Thinking - Cognitive thinking abilities stimulate children through activities
designed to create a sense of cause and effect. In other words, repeated experiences
encompassing a sense of order are helpful for children. Moreover, your child should learn
how to employ her question strategies; for example, how? and why? Question and answer
activities will allow her to mature in basic reasoning and problem solving skills. As your
child participates in solving simple problems, she becomes familiar with formulating
decisions and discovering the ‘AHA’ moment.
Social-Emotional Behavior - On the other hand, social-emotional behavior stimulates
your child in other ways. This area of development increases by placing your child in
environments where she interacts with other children of similar age. By doing so, she is
exposed to many forms of language. Reading and having two-way conversations with her
are also helpful for her own communication skills to increase.
For first time parents, this information my be overwhelming at first glance, but as your
child grows, it becomes a natural part of loving, caring, and encouraging her to flourish
into a healthy adult and contributing member of society. You may have questions
