Where's Waldo in the ATH?

By Julia Hembree, Publisher, Athens Macaroni Kid July 15, 2016
I am so excited about this event! What could be more fun than bringing a book to life in your own town?

For the fifth year in a row, Avid Bookshop is hosting WHERE'S WALDO IN THE ATH? running from July 1 to July 31st. There is no fee to participate in this city-wide local business scavenger hunt. Thank you to
Candlewick Press for sponsoring this beloved annual celebration of local businesses!

Finding Waldo in the ATH is a great summer vacation activity, and a wonderful way for residents to support local business and the Shop Local movement. There are only 250 bookshops in the nation participating and Avid is honored to be included!

WHERE'S WALDO?

In Athens, of course. The famous children's book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting twenty-five different local businesses throughout our community this July. Those who spot him can win prizes, including buttons, book coupons and more. Waldo figures will be hidden in local business establishments.

HOW TO PLAY:

Start by picking up a scavenger hunt sheet at Avid in late June.

Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a "Where's Waldo in the ATH?!" passport with the names of all the participating sites, and get their passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. The first 125 Waldo seekers to get their passports stamped or signed at ten or more sites can bring their passports back to Avid Bookshop to collect prizes. Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand prize drawing on July 31, with the top prize being a 6-volume deluxe set of Waldo books.

"Most local businesses in Athens find July to be a slower month for foot traffic. We have found this annual local-biz scavenger hunt to be not only fun for Waldo seekers, but a benefit to participating businesses. Babysitters, out-of-town house guests, and grandparents find that looking for Waldo is a great summer activity. We're particularly excited about hiding Waldo at the Gift Shop at the Georgia Museum of Art. We hope this encourages people to enjoy this free (and air-conditioned!) local attraction that many don't visit enough." ~Rachel Watkins
